A gate circuit is described comprising flip flops that are each driven by one of two clock signals, and which are arranged such that adjusting the frequency of one of these clock signals changes the number of subsets of display elements that are simultaneously driven. In a foveated display, an image may be produced with different effective resolutions in different parts of the same image by treating groups of display elements as a single pixel. For example, a more detailed portion of the image may be produced with each display element having an independent color, whereas a less detailed portion of the same image may be produced with multiple contiguous display elements having the same color. The gate circuit described herein may allow multiple rows to be activated to produce output from at least some of their display elements at the same time as one another.
