Patent Disclosure by Technical Field: What to Ask the Inventor
Technical field changes the information a disclosure must explain. A mechanical invention may need connection and movement details, software needs processing logic, and materials or biological inventions may depend on preparation and test conditions. Classification helps organize questions; it is not a universal legal template.
Ask questions suited to the solution
| Field | First question | Useful material |
|---|---|---|
| Software | How does processing turn inputs into outputs? | Data relationships, steps and edge conditions |
| Mechanical | How do parts connect, move and transmit forces? | Overall and detail views, operating sequence |
| Electronics | Where are signals created, transmitted and processed? | Circuits, block diagrams, timing and interfaces |
| Materials | How is the material made and measured? | Actual formulations, process conditions and tests |
| Biological | How do the subject, procedure and effect connect? | Existing experiments, relevant sequence information and provenance |
These are preparation suggestions. Requirements for particular attachments, sequence listings or evidence depend on the invention and applicable rules.
Cross-field inventions need connected explanations
Consider a synthetic mechanical sorting system using image recognition. Describing only the recognition algorithm may omit how the actuator works. A mechanical drawing alone may not explain how detection output triggers sorting. Connect the processing and physical action, then distinguish the proposed improvement from background elements.
Pair effects with evidence
Connect each stated effect to a mechanism. For existing tests, include methods and conditions. For untested effects, record the basis and open questions. Do not create comparative experiments, composition ranges or sequences merely to fill a template.
Chinese Patent Law Article 26 is a primary reference for disclosure and support in Chinese applications. The evidence needed for a broad claim depends on the technology; one mandatory embodiment count is not a sound rule for every field.
Separate software settings from legal conclusions
Choosing a field and jurisdiction in the CNIPA.AI workspace helps select the relevant process. A selected label does not establish that the material is sufficient or the subject matter patentable.
Complete the disclosure template and use the field-and-jurisdiction matrix to keep the two assessments distinct.
Can a mechanical template be reused for software?
Reuse source tracking and version control, but do not substitute a component list for an explanation of data processing.
Are more drawings always better?
Drawings should explain relationships in the text. Duplicated or conflicting figures add review work. See the drawing guide for choosing useful views.
