WIPO Patent Search: Using PATENTSCOPE for PCT Publications

If you are looking for WIPO patent search, the official service is PATENTSCOPE. WIPO's service overview describes published international PCT applications, patent documents from participating national and regional offices, and non-patent literature.

What can you search in PATENTSCOPE?

The service supports criteria including keywords, numbers and IPC classifications. Begin by deciding whether you need a known publication, related technical documents or a particular applicant's material. Check the selected collection and the service's coverage information as part of the search, rather than assuming that “international” means every record in every country.

WIPO publishes a user guide and search tips. Use those for current fields and query syntax. Expressions copied from another database may not mean the same thing here.

Start with the identifier when you have one

Keep the complete publication identifier, including its prefix and kind code, and distinguish it from an international application number. Confirm the title, applicant and dates when you open a candidate document.

For a WO publication, do not replace the original identifier with the number of a related national document in your notes. Keep both, with the relationship and document version made explicit. That helps another reader find the exact text you used.

Search concepts before narrowing the result

If you do not have a number, split the technical description into an object, a problem and a mechanism. A synthetic example about a conveyor stopping after a temperature threshold is reached could lead to separate concepts for conveying, temperature measurement and stop conditions. It is an illustration of search preparation, not an executed search or a patentability result.

Read potentially relevant documents before making the conditions more restrictive. Record additional terminology and useful IPC symbols from the documents themselves. Check translations against the original where numerical conditions, negation or relationships between components matter.

PCT publication does not mean a worldwide patent grant

The PCT is an international application procedure. WIPO's PCT FAQ explains the roles of the international phase and national or regional offices. A published PCT application is not a single enforceable patent covering the world.

If your question concerns rights in a particular market, identify the relevant national or regional application and records. Do not infer a grant, current status or identical claims solely from the presence of a WO publication or a family link.

Distinguish the research task from application planning

For technical research, keep the relevant publication and source passages. For application planning, identify the actual route, documents and responsible practitioner; searching PATENTSCOPE does not submit an application.

Is PATENTSCOPE limited to PCT documents?

No. WIPO's overview also lists participating national and regional patent collections and non-patent literature. Coverage varies by collection; check the relevant coverage notes.

Is a WO result a granted patent?

Do not assume so. Identify the document type and distinguish international publication from later national or regional proceedings. The specific claims and rights status require their own checks.

Can I use CNIPA.AI for the same investigation?

You can explore the WO-scope records available in CNIPA.AI, subject to the product's actual coverage and access conditions. A result or absence of results there does not establish the contents of PATENTSCOPE. Use the official service for the corresponding source record.
