Patent Diagram Planning: From a Sketch to a Clear Process

Turn a process sketch into a structured patent diagram. Plan steps, branches and reference numbers before generating a draft figure.

A diagram explains relationships

A mechanical illustration shows a structure; a process diagram shows an ordered method or decisions. Start a patent sketch with the actual inputs, steps and outputs from your disclosure. Do not add steps solely to make the chart look more complex.

Check the sketch against the description

  1. Assign stable step identifiers and use them consistently in the text.
  2. Label decision branches and show where each branch continues.
  3. Keep labels readable at the intended output size.
  4. Check that arrows express the actual sequence, including optional steps.

In the drawing studio, choose a process-oriented preference and review the proposed figure plan. Generated diagrams remain drafts. Consult the USPTO utility application guide when preparing US application materials.
